This festival organised by Jatiwangi art Factory and curated by Heru Hikayat and Juliana Yasin is a community-based event in Jatiwangi, West Java. Local and foreign art practitioners from various disciplines, from visual and performing arts to film, are invited to stay with villagers from  jatiwangi who will be their hosts. This guest-host relationship is the context for the festival.

Participating artists will have an opportunity to experience the life, traditions and culture of the people of Jatiwangi and, in turn, to share their own cultural backgrounds and perspectives as artists with their hosts.

During the period of residency, artists will collaborate with their hosts and other artists to create new works of art for the festival event. Artists and villagers will have an opportunity to showcase their talents and encouraged to use materials available from Jatiwangi.

The guest-host concept is intended to push the borders of art practice and to encourage the creation of art to reflect the ideas, traditions and issues of the community in combination with the ideas and artistic practices of the visiting artists. Participants can explore relationships between traditional-modern, rural-urban, global-local, etc. The festival aims to celebrate contemporary art as created within every day life, thus bringing art closer to the public.

The Jatiwangi Arts Festival committee will act as a third party; a bridge to connect artists and their hosts by facilitating the exploration of ideas and collaboration between artists and hosts.

The festival will be in two stages. The first stage, from 2 – 7 August 2008, is the residency program in which the artists and villages will explore ideas, create works and develop performances. There will be meetings, talks, workshops and visiting programs. The second stage is the festival event, held from 8 – 10 August 2008, in which artists and hosts will present their works and performances.

The Jatiwangi Arts Festival was first organized in December 2006 and was a great success. It resulted in a very interesting exchange of ideas between artists and villagers, connecting their differences. The festival showcased multi disciplinary works (sculpture, performance art, film) in the village of Jatiwangi-Jatisura-Surawangi in Majalengka near Cirebon, West Java. This time the festival will involve more artists and hosts and will be spread over more villages: Jatisura, Surawangi, Sutawangi and Loji. As such, the diversity and every day life of Jatiwangi is expected to be more celebrated.
